According to academia, “modern” means “the 1920s”, “new” means “circa 1996”, and the “future” is what people sixty years ago thought the year 2000 would look like. What word can I use to describe stuff that’s happening now?

No!
What’s cruel is aligning life to the concept of winning and losing. What’s cruel is the ridiculous idea that the world hold some sort of responsibility to whether or not you’re “happy”. You need to understand the world isn’t cruel (nor is it good), you’re only cruel to yourself. Step back and reevaluate your ideals because, more than likely, that’s where your problem stems from.
